What Information Do You Need to Get an Auto Insurance Quote?

A complete auto quote in California needs driver, vehicle, and coverage details. This checklist saves back-and-forth and speeds up accurate pricing.

Desk with laptop — gathering details for an accurate auto quote

Driver information

Full legal name, date of birth, and driver’s license number for every licensed driver in the household (or anyone who regularly uses the vehicles). Insurers also ask about occupation, approximate annual mileage, and major violations or claims in the last five years.

If a young driver is away at school, say so—some carriers offer distance discounts when the car stays home.

Vehicle details

Year, make, model, and VIN are ideal. Mileage and primary use (commute, pleasure, business) matter for rating. If the vehicle has custom equipment or a branded title, mention it up front.

Coverage preferences

Know whether you want state minimum liability or higher limits, and whether you need comprehensive and collision. If you finance or lease, your contract probably requires both plus maximum deductibles the lender allows.

Uninsured motorist coverage is important in California; an agent can explain how UM/UIM differs from liability and what limits make sense next to your assets.

Prior insurance and garaging

Continuous prior insurance often helps rates. Bring your current carrier, policy dates, and liability limits if you are switching. Your garaging ZIP (where the car is parked most nights) must be accurate—using a relative’s address to get a cheaper ZIP is misrepresentation.
